The Sci media facade is an architectural scale, weather-reactive installation enclosing the second floor of Diez Hotel building in the heart of the El Poblado district in Medellín, Colombia.
Working with LED fabricator and artist Gabriel Pulecio, Heckaman created a software system capable of ingesting location weather data in real time and outputting content based on current conditions. Manufactured by Pulecio's studio, the LED array used for this installation was sparse due to budget and power restrictions, so a thick acrylic diffusion layer was used as the exterior material. This material choice transformed a sub-HD output into a large-scale, beautiful and softly radiant light show.
As such, the idea of diffusion was central to the our conceptual development. Incorporating (then) cutting-edge stable diffusion technology, images were generated based on weather-specific prompts and used as part of the generative visuals the form the aesthetics of the installation.
A variety of custom content was created to cover a range of weather conditions. Continuing the motif of diffusion, such content included soothing color fields, dynamic patterns and abstract compositions formed and colored based on altitude, temperature, humidity, wind direction and other factors. Poignant 'moments' were also included, such as special settings for thunderstorms (common in the area) and holidays.
